Artist statement
In Sabine Tress’ painting, the process remains visible: the picture is formed by the superimposition of countless layers of paint – generous glazed gestures bound by dense pigments in acrylic or oil paint. Several works are created in parallel in an open process in which sensual decisions on gesture, surface or colour guide the painter. The collision of contrasts such as transparency and opacity creates a depth of image.
The search for the image, the questioning of the canvas boundaries, being guided by the qualities of the paint material along various material experiments – all this is contained in this very direct and honest painting.
